Day 44: Bahia Dreaming

Day 44
Today I'm in: Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

Unfortunately, this is going to be a boring post without any pictures.  As Aaron can attest (since he lived through three days of me cursing at my laptop) I've been having quite a few computer issues over the last week.  Things were fine in Sao Paulo but not so good here in Salvador.  The biggest issue is that my computer is being really funny about connecting to wi-fi.  My hotel here has wi-fi, but my machine adamantly refuses to connect to it - it says it can't "identify" the network and therefore will only give me "Local" access to the network (i.e., it connects to the router but won't let me out onto the internet.)

I'm currently sitting in the food court at Shopping Barra, a massive shopping mall about three blocks from my hotel (in Brazilian Portuguese, a mall is referred to as a 'shopping'), where I've paid for a two-hour wi-fi pass and fortunately my laptop is cooperating.  All of my pictures from today are on an external hard drive back in my hotel room, which I conveniently forgot to bring here with me.

The good news is that I didn't get to Salvador until about 2pm this afternoon and only had time to do a bit of wandering around today, so there's not much that will go missing tonight.  I spent most of the morning and part of the afternoon getting here - the plane stopped in Belo Horizonte for an hour en route to Salvador, which added to the travel time.  What I did see of Salvador today (mostly the Barra neighborhood around my hotel) looks very promising, and tomorrow I'll be heading for some of the more historic parts of town.

I'm hopeful I'll have a more detailed update tomorrow once I can find a place with more reliable wi-fi and/or get my computer to identify the signal at the hotel.
